This is an easy way to add 2 fractions that have different denominators. It's best to use when the denominators do not have a common factor. It does not work with mixed numbers. Video by Julie Harland http://yourmathgal.com

This method of adding / subtracting fractions with unlike denominators makes operations with fractions seem much quicker and easier. It requires more simplifying at the end, but it certainly makes getting a common denominator and adding the two fractions very quick and simple. In some cases, however, it makes the numbers so large that it makes the problem even more difficult!
