Lesson Summary:

In this lesson, we learn how to find and graph vertical and horizontal asymptotes when the degrees are equal. We start by finding the domain, which is all real numbers except for any values that would make the bottom of the function zero. This gives us our vertical asymptote, which is a dotted line. To find the horizontal asymptote, we divide the coefficients of the leading terms of the numerator and the denominator when their degrees are equal. This gives us a horizontal line that the graph will approach but never cross or touch.

Lesson Description:

Finding and graphing the vertical and horizontal asymptotes when the degrees are equal

I show how to solve math problems online during live instruction in class. This is my way of providing free tutoring for the students in my class and for students anywhere in the world. Every video is a short clip that shows exactly how to solve math problems step by step. The problems are done in real time and in front of a regular classroom. These videos are intended to help you learn how to solve math problems, review how to solve a math problems, study for a test, or finish your homework. I post all of my videos on YouTube, but if you are looking for other ways to interact with me and my videos you can follow me on the following pages through My Blog, Twitter, or Facebook.

The instructor shows how to find the vertical asymptote of a rational function. He sets the denominator equal to zero and solves. He also shows how to find the the horizontal asymptote when the degree of the numerator and denominator are equal.
