Lesson Summary:

In this lesson, you will learn how to solve a system of equations using both substitution and elimination. Substitution involves replacing a variable with its equivalent expression, while in elimination, you add or subtract the equations to get one variable eliminated. By applying these methods to different equations with different variables, you can solve for unknown variables and obtain solutions.

Lesson Description:

Learn what it means to solve a system of equations using substitution and elimination.

  • What is substitution in Algebra?
  • How do you solve the system of equations x + 4y = 26 and x - 5y = -10 using substitution?
  • How do you solve a system of equations using elimination?
  • How do you solve the system of equations 3x - y = 7 and x + 4y = 11 using elimination?
  • How do you get a variable to cancel out when solving a system of equations?

This lesson explains the concept of substitution in Algebra and then uses this concept to solve an equation for a variable and substitute that expression into the other equation to solve. Then, the process of solving using elimination is explained and shown for a different example problem.

I am an online college student and I don't really have much interaction with the instructor. I have a math class and it was extremely difficult for me until I saw this website. This website has been very beneficial to me and I have recommended it to my academic counselor. I thought she could give the link to other math students that are struggling in their math class. The teacher in this video made everything so simple. The students asked the same question that I was wondering so that was helpful to me as well. This is the best website for math help I have come across thus far. THANK YOU!!!!!!
