Lesson Summary:

In this lesson, we learn how to find the rate of change in a word problem. By identifying the independent and dependent variables, we can determine the change in the dependent variable over the change in the independent variable. The example given involved federal vehicle emission standards over a four-year period, and we learned to be careful to note whether the change is going up or down and to adjust the rate of change accordingly, resulting in a final answer of negative one-half.
