Lesson Summary:

This lesson on rotations covers how to determine the center of rotation, direction of rotation, and degree of rotation of geometric figures. The lesson also introduces the concept of rotational symmetry, which is when a figure can be rotated a certain angle and still appear identical to its original position. Real-world examples of rotational symmetry are also shown, such as a dartboard's 10-fold symmetry and a Ferris wheel's high-order symmetry.

Lesson Description:

Learn how to determine the amount and direction of rotations of geometric figures. Also, learn about rotational symmetry.

Additional Resources:
  • Notes on Rotations - Notes from the presentation on rotations.
  • Shodor Interactive Rotation Activity - A great activity allowing you to choose one of three different shapes, choose the center of rotation as well as the magnitude of rotation, and see what the result is.
  • A webpage by Mathisfun.com - This webpage by Mathisfun.com does a great job explaining rotational symmetry and giving several examples of rotational symmetry. A must-see to understand rotational symmetry.
  • Rotation Explanation - An in-depth explanation of what rotation of a figure means.
