In this lesson, we learn how to simplify and write a complex expression in standard form. The first step involves understanding the definition of "i" as the square root of negative 1 and using it to find the values of i squared and i cubed. By replacing i cubed with negative i and i squared with -1, we can rewrite the expression in a scalar formula of a + bi. This standard form is much simpler than the original expression and is an essential skill to have in many areas of math.

In keeping with the title it may be better to give examples like (1+i)Â² or maybe i(1+i) so that you see the complex expression and not just implied in the expression.
