Lesson Summary:

In this lesson, we learn how to find the inverse of a rational function and verify that it’s the correct inverse. The first step is to switch the f of x to y and interchange the x and y to represent that the domain and range are switched. Then, we solve for y and get the inverse function. To verify that the functions are inverses, we do the composition of f and f inverse, ensuring that they both reduce down to x.

Lesson Description:

How to find the inverse of a rational function and verify its inverse

I show how to solve math problems online during live instruction in class. This is my way of providing free tutoring for the students in my class and for students anywhere in the world. Every video is a short clip that shows exactly how to solve math problems step by step. The problems are done in real time and in front of a regular classroom. These videos are intended to help you learn how to solve math problems, review how to solve a math problems, study for a test, or finish your homework. I post all of my videos on YouTube, but if you are looking for other ways to interact with me and my videos you can follow me on the following pages through My Blog, Twitter, or Facebook.

Questions answered by this video:
  • How must you rewrite your f(x) before you proceed to find its' inverse?
  • What happens to the values of y and x in an inverse function?
  • After the interchange of x and y what must you do?
  • Which expression would become f(inverse)x ?
  • How would you verify the inverse you got?
